Folk Art & Photography - Artes Populares y Fotografia
When does a craft become Art?
When it is unique!
Mexican Folk Art is among the most varied and beautiful in the world. Every region
of Mexico has its characteristic and distinctive designs which give it's
hand-crafted objects beauty. We have been able to locate and collect, in
our 20 years of traveling, the creations of these artisans and assemble
an archive of photographic images.
We
offer you treasures of museum quality at fair prices. This selection of
art includes: wood-cut prints by Jose Guadalupe Posada, 19th century engraver
whose skeletal images mock death and public figures and greatly influenced
the art of Diego Rivera and Jose Orozco'. Contemporary photographs of the
people and architecture of Mexico by Jeanne P. Hunt; ceramics from Oaxaca,
Jalisco, Puebla, Chiapas, Michoacan and Guanajuato Yarn
paintings and beaded votive gourds from the Huichol of Nayarit; carved
and painted animals and figures of painted tin and wood from Oaxaca. Among
the creations of papier-mache is the fantastic dragon, the Alebrije, made
by the Linares family of Mexico City, as well as dolls from various states
and artists.
Jewelry
incorporating beads of stone, seeds, glass, clay and silver is in our inventory.
We have some antique, colonial furniture and religious carvings. For the
collector, there are genuine dance masks as well as a wide array of less-expensive
decorative masks. We carry a variety of textiles from a myriad of styles
of ancient, traditional weaves from Huipiles and blankets to rugs and hammocks,
hats, etc., from Oaxaca, Chiapas, Yucatan, and Puebla.
From
our homebase in Yucatan, we bring you the finest and most confortable hammock
in the world. Considered the Rolls-Royce of hammocks,
these are hand-wovenas they have been for centuries by the Maya peoples
of the Yucatan who also weave magnificent hats in damp caves, a process
that prevents the palm leaves from becoming brittle and gives
the finely-woven fibers the ability to fold easily and retain its shape.
The
varieties of Mexican folk art render it impossible to list but a few of
the things available at Hecho A Mano. Lacquer work, boxes, trays, and trunks
from Olinala
in Guerrero with their intricately painted designs and high-relief decorations
are available from such renowned craftsmen as Francisco Colonel, Josefa
Alaya and Juan Garcia.
In short, a visual
feast awaits the collector or the more casual shopper. Moreover, purchases
from Hecho A Mano directly benefit the artesans of Mexico, who receive
commissions and orders for their work.
If
you would like more information, contact Hector Garza and/or Jeanne Hunt.
Our hours are Monday thru Saturday from 10am to 2pm and 4pm to 7pm.
